Price to Discount: discounting from RRP

What this does

Every discount has to come off a price. Normally that price is what the customer sees today, the selling price. Price to Discount lets you calculate the discount from the product's original price / RRP instead, meaning the price before any of your own sale reductions.

You'd reach for this when a discount is really a promise made against the full list price. Think staff discount, member pricing or a colleague scheme: "these customers always get 10% off RRP", whatever else is going on with sale prices at the time.

Choosing your option

On any price-based reward you'll see a Price to Discount setting with two choices:

Option The discount comes off Use it for
Selling price (default) Today's price Normal "20% off what you'd pay" promotions
Original price / RRP The pre-sale list price Always-on entitlements (staff, member, colleague) or any offer written as "off RRP"

When you choose Original price / RRP, a short explanation appears on screen so it's clear the calculation is about to behave differently.

The customer always gets the best price

This is the part that makes RRP-based discounts safe to run. When you discount off the RRP, the platform checks how much you've already taken off in the selling price and counts that towards the offer. It only gives the difference, so you never discount twice and never leave the customer worse off.

Take a £100 RRP item with a "30% off RRP" promotion, so the aim is for the customer to pay £70:

  • Still full price at £100 → promotion takes £30 off → customer pays £70.
  • Already reduced to £95 → promotion takes only £25 more → customer still pays £70, not £65.
  • Already in a deeper sale at £60 → the offer is already beaten, so the promotion adds nothing and the customer keeps the £60.

In that last case the promotion still applies successfully, it just applies £0. The simplest way to hold it in your head: the customer pays whichever is lower, the RRP minus your discount or today's sale price. They always get at least the deal you promised, and never less than they'd have had anyway.

Which rewards support it

Price to Discount is available on the main price-based rewards: Product Discount, Product Bundle, Multi-Tier and Order Discount. It doesn't apply to shipping discounts, free-item rewards or fixed "set price" rewards, where there's no product price for it to work from.

One thing worth checking with your tech team

Nothing new needs to be built for this. Both the selling price and the original price are standard attributes that your product catalogue already sends us, so the capability is there from day one.

The only thing worth a quick check is that your feed sends a genuine original price where one exists, rather than simply repeating the selling price.

This won't ever cause a broken promotion or a bad customer price. The reason to check is subtler: if the original price only mirrors the selling price, choosing "Original price / RRP" will quietly behave the same as the default, and you might believe you're discounting off RRP when in practice there's no higher price to work from.

What you're selling Original price should be Selling price should be
Full price, no markdown The list price The same
Marked down or on sale The pre-markdown RRP What the customer pays today
No meaningful RRP The same as selling price The same

Good to know

  • It's off by default. Existing promotions keep calculating from the selling price exactly as before. Nothing changes until you choose the RRP option.
  • A genuine RRP is what makes it work. As above, the effect depends on your feed carrying a real original price. If in doubt, check with your tech team.
